Registered Tax Agent & CPA | One Firm, Both Credentials

Do I need a tax agent to lodge my tax return?

No. You can lodge your own return through myTax. A registered tax agent is worth considering when your return includes rental property, capital gains, crypto or business income, or when you want to lodge after 31 October under an agent's lodgment schedule. Only registered tax agents can charge a fee to prepare and lodge a tax return.

If you want advice before 30 June, see our tax planning service.

Lodgement dates | As at 03/10/2026

When is my tax return due?

Individuals lodging their own 2025-26 return have until 31 October 2026, or the next business day when 31 October falls on a weekend, as it does this year. If you use a registered tax agent, engage them before 31 October. Most agent clients can lodge later under the agent's schedule. As at 03/10/2026.

The ATO's 2025-26 lodgment schedule for registered agents lists 15 May 2027 for most remaining individuals, including new registrations, and 31 October 2026 where a prior-year return was outstanding at 30 June 2026. Our ATO due dates guide lists the other key dates.

Personal Tax Return Services

Personal Tax Return Service for Melbourne Individuals

This service is for employees, professionals, investors, tradies and sole traders who want their return prepared correctly and lodged on time. We review every income stream, check the deductions you can claim against your records and lodge through our registered tax agent practice.

What to bring to your tax appointment

  • Income: your income statement, bank interest, dividend and managed fund statements, and any ABN or foreign income.
  • Property: rental agent statements, loan interest statements and purchase or sale contracts.
  • Investments: share and crypto trade history, including purchase dates and cost base records.
  • Deductions: receipts or records for work-related expenses, donations and income protection insurance.
  • Other: private health insurance details (we use these to check whether the Medicare levy surcharge applies), study loan balances and last year's notice of assessment.

Rental property owners

Investment property tax returns

If you own a residential rental property, your return must include the rental income you receive and the expenses you can claim against it. We prepare a rental schedule for each property. Deductions generally apply while the property is rented or held to produce income.

Repairs and improvements are treated differently. The ATO allows repairs to be claimed in the year you incur them, while capital works are deducted over time. If repairs and improvements are done together, you can claim the repairs only where their cost can be separated, so ask your contractor for an itemised invoice.

Bring your rental agent statements, loan interest statements, purchase or sale contracts and any depreciation schedule. Our property tax accounting service covers rental properties, sales and developments in more detail.

Shares and property

Capital gains tax on shares and property

A capital gain or loss arises when a CGT event happens, most commonly when you sell shares or a property. We calculate the cost base, work out the gain or loss and report it in your return.

An individual who is an Australian resident for tax purposes can reduce a capital gain by 50% if they owned the asset for at least 12 months before the CGT event. The ATO notes that the CGT changes announced in the 2026-27 Federal Budget do not apply to Tax Time 2026, so we apply the current rules to 2025-26 returns.

Keep your purchase and sale contracts, brokerage statements and anything that supports the cost base. If you are planning a sale, speak to us before you sign a contract.

Investors and traders

Crypto tax for investors and traders

Disposing of a crypto asset can have tax consequences, and the treatment depends on whether you hold crypto as an investment or as part of a business. The ATO publishes guidance on calculating and reporting capital gains on crypto disposals, on the records you must keep, and on when crypto is trading stock or produces assessable income.

We start with a full export of your transaction history from every exchange and wallet you have used, so that purchase dates, disposal dates and costs can be matched. We then identify each disposal and prepare the gains and losses for your return. Staking income, airdrops and DeFi activity are reviewed individually because the treatment can differ.

Our crypto tax page for investors and traders sets out the records we ask for.

Self-employed

Tax returns for sole traders and contractors

If you run a business as a sole trader, you declare the net income from the business in your individual tax return. The ATO states that you do not lodge a separate return for the business. We prepare the business schedule alongside your personal return, covering income, deductions and, where they apply, the personal services income (PSI) rules.

If you are not sure whether you are a contractor or an employee, read the ATO contractor rules explained. GST registration, BAS and bookkeeping are separate obligations. Our small business accountants can look after them, with BAS quoted as a fixed fee agreed in writing.

Bring your income records, business bank statements and expense receipts. We use them to prepare the business schedule and check which deductions you can claim.

Beyond the return

From a single return to ongoing support

Clients who also want tax planning or business support can move to a monthly package. Fixed fees, agreed in writing after your initial meeting. Packages suit people who run a company or trust, or own several properties. See our small business accountant service.
